| | In an effort the occupy the boys while I'm unpacking, I've enrolled them in a few camps. This week is Jacob's biggest week: Nike Baseball camp at Tiger Town Field, which is where the Detroit Tigers hold their spring training. He hasn't been the biggest baseball fan or player but this summer he really wanted to try this camp. We were pretty nervous all day to see how he'd make out but he did well. As we were walking onto the field today for him to join the group (the group of boys his age was about 20 and he was the youngest..most were 9 & 10 and the camp overall was for 12-19 year olds), he said, "Oh mom! I have such stage fright!" But he stuck it out and did fine.
Then, on the way home as he recapped the day for me, telling me good and bad he said, "I was a little insulted...my bat was smaller than everyone else's and they teased me about it." I love that he used the word insulted.
He began a story about a boy who was 13 or so who was not playing as well as he wanted and he made a comment about how he doesn't practice enough and then said to Jacob, "kid, when you get to be my age, don't be like me." "Mom," Jacob said, "I really think the kid thought too lowly of himself." Funny. Apparently everyone took to calling him "kid" and he didn't seem to mind being the youngest and least experienced. I am thrilled that he rose up to the challenge.
Joseph on the other hand is home this week and has set up shop in the upstairs playroom. He has made it into his "library" complete with library cards, employees (me and daddy), open and closed signs, etc. He sits up there at his 'desk' which is the former train table, has a clip-on lamp for his 'work space,' welcomes you to the library, suggests books of interest and makes you sign out your choices and gives a due date. Nothing scary is allowed in the library so my job is to screen/censure donations.
Jonah is frustratingly working on tooths 3 & 4 this week. He is soaked in drool all day. He is also cruising around furniture at lightning speed. He has pulled 3 pieces of art onto his head because I have them propped up on the floor all around the house as I figure out where/how to decorate this intimidating place. It is a crawling baby disaster area.
My uncle In Scotland passed away last week and my mom is there. I was unable to go and regret it. Tomorrow Cecile arrives with 3 of her children for a week. Our first guest room occupants!
